Renovation & Addition Opportunities

There are exciting opportunities when we consider renovation/addition work differently from new construction.

The carbon saved by reusing the existing school is ~2000 metric Tons.   This is equivalent to: 2,385 acres of US forest in sequestering CO2 for one year 445 gas cars emitting CO2 for one year

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Renovate existing Eastgate school and construct a new addition for a new 99,300 square foot 6^th through 12th grade choice school for a capacity of 525 students.

In January 2022, Mahlum began to develop the Educational Specifications with stakeholders from Bellevue School District and the Big Picture School. The purpose of the Educational Specifications is to define the programmatic, functional, spatial, and environmental requirements for the Big Picture School. The design process was paused during the conversation about elementary school consolidation last year and then resumed last Spring after it was determined that Bellevue Big Picture School would relocate to the Eastgate location.

An important part of the process is engagement with the diverse public partners that have input on the development of the project. City agencies review our development and define parameters. For example, this process allows the district to change the school occupancy from an elementary to a high school in a residential zone.
